Description
As we dig into what it means to ask students text-dependent questions, it's important to ground ourselves in this idea of evidence as it relate to the Common Core State Standards. The Standards require that students answer questions that depend on their careful reading of the text. Instead of asking questions that allow students to rely on prior knowledge or experiences, students use text-dependent questions to examine things like the text's structure, vocabulary & syntax, and author's purpose and/or theme. Students' understanding and analysis is typically demonstrated through writing tasks in which students must provide text evidence to support their claim.
